HELP! Bearded ingested roach covered in Raid

Postby wingsformarie » Wed Jun 12, 2019 5:48 pm

A roach sprayed with raid flew around and fell into my beardies cage and he ate it right away. This happened maybe 5 minutes ago, there is no vet open in my area. Should I induce vomiting? Please help!!!!

On no! You can go get some charcoal at a drug store.

That's not good. Can you get some activated charcoal? I would administer that mixed with water as quickly as possible. You can also put together a slurry with some mint, cilantro, and parsley which may help. Offer plenty of water to try and help his kidneys process the toxin.

Been an hour, how are things? Any update for us?

Hopefully you were able to administer some activated charcoal.

He is still acting normally, and I was able to get some activated charcoal in him. Thank you guys so much for the suggestions. I don't know if I should force water or not? He just ate some super worms, but got really stressed when I forced a little water so I stopped. He is going to the vet first thing in the morning.

I'm glad to hear he is still acting OK and that you were able to administer the activated charcoal quickly. How much did you give him? I would probably try to get some more water into him. Don't be TOO forceful with it, but it may help him flush everything out of his system. Keep a close eye on him overnight. If he is OK in the morning, then he is likely to be OK in the long run. Hopefully he didn't get too much poison in his system to begin with. Please keep us posted.

I mixed a 280 mg capsule in a small cup with ~20mL water and then used a syringe to give him 2-3mL of that solution. Should I give more? Thank you guys again so much.

Hello,

Wow, poor dragon! So how is he doing tonight?
I'm glad to hear you were able to get some activated charcoal into him quickly.
I would go ahead & give another dose, just to be sure his system gets cleared out.
Are you getting him into the vets today (thursday)?
At least he did eat some superworms, though. Hopefully he will be alright. Keep us
posted on him.

I agree, activated carbon powder mixed in water right away .

Keep a close eye on her , she may be fine , but she's not likely developed a tolerance to the toxins used in Raid like the wild geckos, skinks and dragons will over time because those that live in urban areas will encounter sick insects and dead insects and eat them on a regular basis , and though selecting so only individual lizards with a strong tolerance produce offspring.

I've seen wild water skinks who've eaten a roach who has been in contact a surface spray or baits , and insects that have been in contact with there/ eaten the bait, they tend to become a bit hyperactive for about an hour and eventually settle back to normal and are back next day looking for more.

Raid active ingredients

Imiprothrin
Controls a specific pest in a biocide product, such as in an insecticide, antimicrobial or repellent product.
Imiprothrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide. To insects it acts as a neurotoxin causing paralysis.

Cypermethrin
Controls a specific pest in a biocide product, such as in an insecticide, antimicrobial or repellent product. It behaves as a fast-acting neurotoxin in insects.

I've found this : https://efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/do ... 2009.EN-14

He is still acting normally, but I’m taking him to the vet as soon as they open. He drank more water last night and ate some salad and more super worms.

Well the fact he went through the night and is doing fine is a great sign. Let us know what the vet says. :)

Okay, so the vet said he is doing great! He was a little dehydrated from the charcoal so they gave him some subq fluids. The vet said he likely would have shown symptoms already and he ate this morning and is still 100% normal, but I’m supposed to keep an eye out for tremors that may indicate liver damage. Thank you all so much for your help, the vet said without me doing the charcoal quickly it could have been a different story. Also, the Raid is in the dumpster and I already don’t allow my landlord to spray for bugs my unit, but I’ve definitely learned my lesson from this and will be extra vigilant going forward. Thanks again from me and Zeke! 💜
