poor puddle

Hi there!
Our 2 year male beardie has had a rough summer: parasites, a limp, eye infection, parasite reoccurance, then a really aggressive "specialist" whom was rough in treating him and prescribed antibiotics. The antibiotics made him so weak; I couldn't do it.
Over the past week he has been progressively slowing and not wanting to open his eyes.
Now he has slept all day.
Could he be burmating or shutting down?
What should I do?
Poor baby; I love him so much and want him to be at least comfortable!
Thank you,
Katie & Puddle

Hi Katie, I'm so sorry that Puddle is sick. Can you post a few pics of him + his set up ? How long was he on antibiotics ? How are you keeping him hydrated ? Hydration is important when they've been sick and/or on any kind of meds. What type of lights do you have ?

I doubt he would be going in to brumation if he was just sick. Hopefully some adjustments can help him.

Thank you for your reply!
You have commented on him before.
His set up is good- a great uvb from lightyourreptiles and a basking spot that is around 95 degrees.
He is in a 200 gallon tank. I don't think it is the set up.
He was only on antibiotics for one day, and he got really pale with a very dark beard.
we bathe him every other day and have been surenge feeding him greens blended with super worms.

I do remember the names, :) but I don't always remember specifics of the dragon's problems . Has he been eating the syringe feedings readily ? His sleepiness may be wanting to brumate, as long as he's a healthy weight it's O.K to let him rest.

Hello,

So sorry he is not doing well right now!
What type of antibiotics or medication did they give him? It really sounds like it really bothered him a lot. I definitely wouldn't give that one anymore because of that.
Is he losing weight?
You could try increasing the basking temperatures to 98-100 to see if that helps out some. Has he had trouble digesting?
He definitely could be trying to brumate, but I would really watch him closely to be sure he is not ill before letting him sleep all of the time.
Are his other issues pretty much cleared up now from earlier in the year?
Let us know how Puddle is doing.

Thank you, Tracie!
I have tried raising his basking levels, and he seems to be really unhappy with that.
I think the antibiotics did mess with him, though he just had two doses before I refused to give him more (sulfameth & trimeth).
He has been sleeping peacefully in his fluffy bed in his tank. I just turned on his lights, but he doesn't want to wake but seems peaceful.
Do i need to leave on his uvb?
I feel so bad for our poor baby!
Thank you for your support!

Hello,

If he truly is trying to brumate he wont want to bask much at all. If you can determine that for sure & that he isn't ill, it would definitely ease your mind! During brumation, if he isn't spending much time basking you can turn the UVB off for awhile.
The antibiotics will really affect them, absolutely. If he didn't need antibiotics in the first place that would make him worse.
How do his eyes look, are they nice & raised or are they sunken in any? His beard is normal color & not black/darker in color?

I am glad he seems to be sleeping peacefully. Let us know how he is doing.

Hi!
HIs eyes don't seem sunken; I will get a better look in the morning, though his beard is darker.
I'm not sure what to do; I may call the vet in the morning!
Thank you,
Katie & Puddle

Hello Katie,

That is good his eyes are not looking sunken in. It would be a good idea to monitor his weight too.
If his beard is darker than usual, while sleeping in his cave, something might be off.
It could be that his body just hasn't recovered from the antibiotics yet, also.

Let us know how Puddle is doing.

Its probably best to discuss the antibiotic issue with the vet. What was it given for? Bactrim is pretty bad for causing belly problems. But just like any drug, if there are side effects...stop meds and discuss it with the provider ASAP. Taking a couple doses and stopping it wouldn't cause a 'super infection'. But that's always a worry when stopping antibiotic early.

Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.
