Good morning! :) We are first time bearded dragon owners who are quickly learning that our research was not enough. We talked to several people who own dragons, read A LOT on line, and THOUGHT we had the basics down before bringing Spiro home. Clearly we were mistaken on a few things, and I am looking to quickly correct the things we've done wrong. We will be picking up a Zoo Med 26061 Reptisun 10.0 T5-Ho Uvb 24W Fluorescent Lamp, 22" this weekend for starters, and a digital Thermometer / Hygrometer. I also think we'll be changing Spiro's flooring from reptile carpet to a nonadhesive shelf liner or tile, because the last few nights his humidity level has gone between 50% & 60% and we know these are way too high. I've tried a few things that haven't helped, and I'm hoping that between getting better gauges and removing the reptile carpet, this will be enough. If not, we will invest in a dehumidifier too.

We got Spiro from a breeder here in our area. He was just at 2 months old when we got him and we've had him 2 weeks (tomorrow) now. He eats "okay" most days, tho some days he just does not want to eat for me and will only eat for my hubby. On average he is eating between 20-40 small to medium size crickets each day + some collard greens with a little acorn squash and parsley mixed in. He really seems to like the squash!

I hope you all will tell me that he looks alright... but if not, please let me know so I can make corrections to have a happy and healthy dragon.

This pic was taken the day we got Spiro (he was 2 months old then... so 8 weeks)

If you're not able to view the pics I shared, here's a link to the album. The pic of Spiro on the rock is from the first day we got him.

Welcome to the forum! Spiro is a cute little guy. The T5 UVB light will make a big difference. They are very good bulbs and well worth the investment. 50-60% humidity is fine, especially overnight when the lights are off (humidity tends to decrease when the lights are on). Those are normal numbers within their native range. I generally don't worry much about humidity unless it feels very humid to me (or very dry) in the room. Replacing the repticarpet isn't necessary but it will make cleanup easier. The carpet needs to be washed frequently and tends to tatter with frequent washing. If you wish to upload photos directly on this site, you can upload them here https://www.beardeddragon.org/useruploads/ and then post them to your thread using the XIMG button when you reply. I was able to see them in the google photos link though.

Awww. Congrats on the new beardie. He sure is a cute little guy. I love the little two story action you got going for him. Sounds like you guys have done well research and are changing what needs to be changed. You'll make wonderful beardie parents, I'm sure! Keep us updated with pics of the little one! I sometimes miss when my Tampico was that small, she was a curious little thing. Hope he's got his own little personality quirks that you guys adore!

Thank goodness for that! We're headed out tonight to get the bulb and a digital gauge. After speaking with even more bd owners, I'm learning that the round gauges tend to read high, so hopefully we'll get a good digital that will be more accurate.

And thanks for the link to upload pics. It's been a while since I've been on an actual forum, I forgot all the features that are sometimes available. I edited my original post with new pic links so now people shouldn't have to go offsite to see him. :D

He already cracks us up! OMG! My daughter was sitting at the computer today playing with Flarp. Spiro was cocking his head and running all over his tank looking for the sound. Had us rolling! He also lets me know when he's upset with me... I'm the only person in the family that he'll twitch his tail at... and then he won't eat for me. My hubby has to feed him on those days, and he eats for him just fine. He and I are coming to an understanding tho, I hope. He eats pretty good for me now... and I'm glad, because with my hubby's job we never know if he'll be home at feeding time or not.

I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
