Hello! I just recently got a bearded dragon (literally today) named Victor. I have been researching for a few weeks and have wanted one for about a year now. I dove in. I've got a few questions.

My setup:
-20 gallon wide (I know, I will upgrade to a 40 gallon later down the road (6 months), don't have the space right now)
- This screen cover: https://m.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/imagitarium-29-gallon-terrarium-screen#
-This calcium supplement: https://m.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/zilla-calcium-supplement-reptile-food-spray#
-This UVB light: https://m.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/zilla-slimline-desert-50-uvb-t8-fluorescent-fixture#
-This heater:
https://m.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/zoo-med-repticare-ceramic-infrared-heat-emitters-100-watts#
-This dish (Will get a bigger one when they are bigger): https://m.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/conceptual-creations-deep-soaker-reptile-dish#
-This lamp thing for the heater: https://m.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/flukers-clamp-lamp-with-dimmer#

-

I also got him a cave of sorts that has room for him to climb on to bask in the heater. They didn't have any crickets where I went (Petco) so the guy recommended me to give him earth worms and spray them with the calcium. He (they) didn't eat the one I tried to feed him so I'm not sure why that is. Has me worried, but he is adjusting to the new environment. Any ideas on what to do in terms of feeding?

My setup as of right now looks like this:

Here he is!

Do you have any suggestions on what to do? Tips? Advice?

Thank you!

I forgot to mention I got reptile carpet. The guy who helped me at Petco was a sort of lizard specialist from what I could tell? He said "Petco recommends this, I recommend this." Overall very friendly. The Petco in my area keeps their animals very well. Except the bettas, but I guess that's expected.

I have a few thoughts on the setup. The ceramic heat emitter is good to have for heat overnight if needed. It's not needed unless the temps drop below 65 or so and then only enough to bring it into the low 70s. What are you using to measure the temperatures? I suggest either a couple of digital thermometers with probes (one for each side) or an IR temp gun.

You will need a bright white basking light and another dome fixture for it. I suggest using either a ZooMed Repti Basking Spot Lamp or a PAR38 halogen flood light from the hardware store. A 70w should be plenty and it's dimmable. Adjust the height or wattage until you get about 100-110 surface temp on top of the rock (Basking area) and a gradient down to about 75-80 on the cool side by the water dish.

The UVB light should sit 6-8'' above the basking area and might be best to mount under the top using some wire or similar to secure it. With those fixtures you also need to remove the clear plastic that is in front of the bulb because that will intercept all of the UVB and render the bulb useless.

Looking good. Its clear that you've done lots of research. :) I hope you enjoy being a beardie parent.

For now, I agree completely with mounting the UVB under the mesh so that it is more effective. A piece of wood which allows a higher basking point would also be good - aim for 8 inches or so from lighting.

I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.
