Calcium dificiant dragon only laid 1 egg?

Hello everyone,

I tried asking this in the Health section but no one would help me, so maybe it's more of a breeding issue.

I'm a little concerned about my dragon, Doran. My wife and I messed up a while back (first dragon), we thought we had all the UV requirements met, but we were wrong. We have since made sure we have everything we need. Because of that, however, Doran has low calcium and bone degradation. We have taken her to the vet and got her some calcium syrup. She seemed to be getting better, until she laid an egg. Now she seems to be getting worse again, despite us still giving her the calcium syrup.

While at the vet, the specialist checked her for parasites and had to force her to poop. While he was rooting around in there, we asked the vet if Doran was a boy or girl (we thought boy at the time) and he told us Doran was a boy and showed me his testicles.
Well not a month later (today) I came home and there's an egg! Just the one. We had no idea she was pregnant (let alone a girl) and never saw any eggs in her abdomen (because apparently you can see them?)

We set up a bowl with some dirt for her to dig in, but she hasn't done anything yet. She doesn't seem the least bit interested in it.

I'm a little concerned because she already has calcium issues and the vet mentioned that making eggs can suck her of her calcium even more. Also, as far as I can tell, there is nothing else in her abdomen.

Is it possible that she can have only 1 egg? She's never even seen another dragon so she definitely isn't pregnant or anything.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Danny, sorry that your other post was missed. It's very uncommon for a beardie to produce only one egg, there are usually quite a few more. But it may be possible on very rare occasion that the other follicle never developed in to eggs. It may also be that she had a few others but ate them. Can you post a few full body pics of her and also of her set up ?

By the way, it's good that the vet gave you liquid calcium but it's very concerning that he gave a 100% incorrect answer as to her gender. Most experienced reptile vets would know a male from a female. Whatever he tried to show you as the " testicles " , even using that term is incorrect. The part of the anatomy that shows the dragon yo be a male would be the hemi penile bulges located in the tail, clearly seen as lumps under the skin if the tail is held the right way.

So how is your dragon doing now ? Is she eating at all ? Oh, and here's how to post pics :

Going out on a limb here but could this one egg actually be the white part of the urate to her waste? My female sometimes lays a good chunk of white urate and it looks like it could be an egg but it isn't. Was there feces with it? I would think your dragon would produce larger quantities of the urate due to the higher doses of calcium it is getting.
I'm also very concerned about your vet misdiagnosing gender.

Hey everyone,

Sorry I haven't been around. Truth be told, with all the worried running around we've been doing about this, I completely forgot I posted this!

Doran is just fine. We took him (her?) to the vet, there's no sign of other eggs and she's eating/pooping, so I'm happy.

AHBD, thank you very much for the advice, we are guessing she must have eaten them or something. She never did dig. And I would like to clear something up with the vet, I was paraphrasing. Initially, he said female right away, then said no wait, I found his "balls" (my words), I don't remember what he called them but I'm going to assume it was hemi penile bulgies. Is gender supposed to be easy to determine at around a year? If so, then I agree that that is a little worrying.

PoezDad, I don't think so...isn't the urate usually hard? This was soft and well...egg shaped. There was a little bit of feces with it, but not much.

I will try to post some pics for you guys. Thanks again!

Here are some pics. I don't have one of the tank on me, but it's custom so I'll be sure to add it.

Here is a full body and two of the egg in question.

Yes that is definitely an egg. :) And yes, it's quite easy to determine gender, esp. if you're a vet with experience. Some dragons can be more difficult to sex but it is usually obvious. Good to here that Doran is doing well. :)
