I just have a question about how I should set up this lamp. It is an under cabinet light fixture that I got from amazon and I was wondering if I could keep the plastic cover over the bulb for safety just in case the lamp fell or would it make it so that my beardie couldn’t get enough uvb rays? I’m having to use command hooks to mount it in the tank and I just don’t trust them entirely to stick well enough. If anyone has a better way for hanging the lamp I would love some ideas. I have a zoo med 40 gallon breeder tank with the screen top that it came with.

Thank you for any advice :D

You can use these as well command Velcro fasteners- picture hanging wire – plastic zip ties

What tube is it? The T 5 or T 8 ? that would depend on where it goes---- if its the T 5 and your screen is wide holed on top of screen - if its a fine mesh inside approx 10-11 inches from basking -- T 8 inside tank approx 6-8 inches from basking area

You need to remove the plastic, it does block a lot of uv like you thought.

In the past when I used those fixtures, I had good success with heavy duty velcro.

<<<< take the plastic cover off and throw it away . It will block 100% of the UV from the tube.

<<<< What you need to hang / secure the hood under the (mesh ?) lid is some long cable ties/zip ties
you can pick them at any office supplies, hardware or $ shop or on Ebay , they look like this
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Nylon-Cable-Tie-Ties-Black-2-5-3-5-4-8-7-6-9-X-100-150-200-300-370-530mm-UV-Good/332871964184?hash=item4d80b71618:m:m40KOkegiGiJeePUguhY5cQ&var=541991102297
simply push one end of each of two ties of a length that will go around the hood through the mesh ,
wrap each around the hood and back up through the mesh
form two loops (one at each of the hood
.

T8 10% tube will need a reflector to give good UVA and UVB flux at the basking spot .
http://www.lightyourreptiles.com/arcadia-t8-48-lamp-reflector/
These are easy to attach to a naked T8 or T5HO tube and will essentially double the UV where you need it.

Here is a guide for setting up your UV to provide sufficient levels of BOTH UVA and UVB
viewtopic.php?f=34&t=235611 and a very handy graphic to help understand how to set up the tank (was provided by Arcadia Reptile Laboratories - the numbers in columns A and B are UVB flux

I suggest aiming for a UVB Flux at the basking spot of about 200 microW / sq.cm , simply read off the UVB flux vs distance for a similar source to those whose UVB flux vs distance is shown in the graphs

I suggest you invest
