So I made a huge enclosure as my Beardie is starting to get a lot bigger. It's 48" wide 24" deep and 36" high. Its an open top, I was gonna hang the hood off the ceiling. I need to know 3 things.
1. How high should I hang the hood above the tallest item in the tank.
2. Is it ok to go with a 36" hood centered in a 48" enclosure. Oviously the problem is the 48" hood won't fit. I'm assuming the 6" on each side will be no problem.
3. The way I designed it. Back is wood left side is wood. Front is plexiglass and the right side is plexiglass. Insted of a door the front glass only comes up 12" the rest is open. Will he escape easily? 12" is a pretty bug jump I don't think it's even possible.

That's a great size. Can you post some photos of it? Are you using a T5 fixture? If so, (and you should)I'd mount it about 12'' above the basking spot. You could even get away with a 24'' fixture. You'll want to put it on the same side of the tank as the basking light so you can create a zone of high heat and UVB exposure while allowing for an area of low heat and low UVB exposure on the other side. Putting in lots of climbs and shade areas is a good idea as well. There's a photo of Taterbug's enclosure that shows the zones and climbing areas that I'm describing. https://sites.google.com/site/thelizardmadness/lighting-guides

With the front glass being only 12'' up I'd think it would be relatively easy for an adult to scale that by just going up on their legs. They are pretty good climbers. I'd try to fit some kind of hinged door to cover the rest and latch it when you aren't around. Otherwise I encourage interaction and letting them out of the tank to explore.

This was before I put the background and reptile carpet down. Once it's finished on Sunday I'll post picks of him and his enclosure. You have pointed me in the right direction. Thank you. Do you have any particular recommendations as to brands for the hood? Some are so cheap and some are so Expensive, very confusing. Some Have leds, I'm not sure for what.

Yes, for your UVB you'll want to go one of a couple (both good) ways.

This fixture http://www.amazon.com/Sunblaster-904296-NanoTech-Fixture-Reflector/dp/B00AKKUBDQ

With this bulb http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiSun-10-0-Lamp/dp/B00AQU8HAO/

Or this combo set http://www.lightyourreptiles.com/22-t-5-ho-fixture-high-output-with-arcadia-d3-12-ho-bulb/

For the basking light you can just embed a bulb socket in the ceiling. The wattage will vary depending on the height but you could hook it to a thermostat or dimmer. You could even put two sockets side by side and use two lower wattage bulbs to create a wider basking area. Lots of good options available there.

Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
