Depends on how accurate you want it. I have a ryobi and a cheep off brand one. Less expencive ones have a lower "d:s" ratio meaning you have to hold them close for accuracy (my $10 one has a ratio of 1:1, my ryobi is better at 12:1 I think), have a wider tolerance (+ or - so many degrees) and a narrower effective range (my cheep one only goes up to 120F).
You can get a good one for 20-40$
