The 76cm is max penetration (to be able to detect any UVB flux) …. this is not the effective distance. See this :

For a "naked" T5ho 10% UVB tub the optimal distance is that distance where a solarmeter will show about 200 microW UVB / sq.cm, about 6" (15cm) from the tube to the basking spot.
For a T5ho 10% UVB tube in reflector hood or with a slip on reflection (focusing the UV down and towards the basking spot) , the optimal distance becomes 10" (25cm).
