1) It really depends. I personally used glass, because (a)it was cheaper, and (b) I had read a whole lot of things saying that acrylic scratches and that they eventually turn yellow and warped. On the other hand, it is suppose to be stronger.
2) If you get glass from Lowes, they will cut it for you (which was a huge plus for me) and I'm pretty sure if they mess it up they will replace it, so you don't have work about that. I'm pretty sure Lowes and Home Depot will cut wood for you. I cut mine myself, but it really is up to you.
3) I have to say, SLIDING. I was going to do front opening, but it was a lot more work.
4) Just cut holes for vents and use mesh, wire, screen, or plastic vents.
