Newly rescued adult

I just rescued my baby spike a week ago from my nephews friend. He was an impulse purchase by friends dad to please his friend who very quickly lost interest. He is now 3-5 years old( they don't know, they had him for around 2 years) he was adequately fed and heated, but wasn't ever snuggled or played with. Now he is very aggressive and standoffish, especially with my husband and boys. At first I could at least hand feed and bathe him, but He is more combative with me after my husband and brother handled him. Now he wont let me pick him up even with a long warm up ( showing my hands approaching from below ECT.) I have only had girls previously, is thins a male thing or because of his past? Really want to show him he is loved and safe, any ideas? I don' t want to do anything traumatic!

This is probably due to the way he was treated in the past, unfortunately. Some of it may be his personality in general (some of them are more social than others), but given time and care he is likely to become friendlier toward you. It may take many months and lots of patience, but it is worth the effort. Don't be too forceful about handling for a while. Spend time near his enclosure and talk to him and try offering some treats by hand. Try to develop some sort of routine. They tend to respond well to a routine and he may become happier once he has settled into a comfortable routine with you.

Thanks for the response...I have noticed that he is much more cuddly when I'm alone, baths and feeding are better and he loves watching king of the hill, so I put it on and snuggle a minute after his bath. I think you are right he may just be anxious as he has been alone so long. Anyway appreciate your help!

I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
