Friend with Leopard Gecko

[TOPIC AUTO-LOCKED DUE TO INACTIVITY]

So my friend just got a Leopard Gecko as her first reptile. I have an 11 month old Bearded Dragon and the research that I've been doing with her shows that these two reptiles are very different. I read that Leopard Geckos don't eat plants of veggies, is this true? Also I read to keep a constant supply of mealworms in a bowl in the cage constantly, will he overeat? Also we are very confused regarding the light situation. She has a heat mat under the cage which doesn't get the cage's air temp high enough, but how do you take the surface temp? Also I read that they don't bask, is this true? She ordered a Ceramic Heat Emitter and a dome light fixture since her air temps won't rise over 75. He's in a 10 Gallon tank with a rock- like substrate, no loose particles and has two hides on each side of the tank. He maybe 4-6 weeks old and she got him from PetSmart. Thank in advance! -Adriana

Hey Adriana, yes it is true most leopard geckos eat animal protein like worms ,crickets and roaches .Through mealworms can be feed to the leopard gecko I won't recommend it as they have hard exoskeletons that could cause impaction and are not the most nutritious I would suggest Dubai roaches which are easy to keep, cant survive cold nor climb surfaces, more nutritious and easy to breed a reptile owners perfectly made all over insect.leopard geckos do not bask because in nature they get there heat from rocks that were heated by the sun when it was up as they are nocturnal they don't receive it directly from the sun itself .This is why heat mats are preferred when keeping leopard geckos because they need belly heat not heat coming from above but a addition of a CHE won't hurt the Leo .Never place the food bowl by the heat put it on the cool side of the tank. Also make sure to supplement calcium and vitamins .Don't forget a UV light I recommend Reptisun 10.0 TUBE as the coil UV 's don't give out the right amount of UV without UV the leopard Gecko can't break down calcium without the production of D3 causing Metabolic Bone Disease a.k.a MBD.One last thing never mix beardies with leopards because of the different types of bacteria their feces have .

Thanks for this info! I askedd my friend about her uvb and she said she had a light called the Day and Night LED Low Energy Lighting Device. Is this okay? I read that they don't need uvb lights since they are nocturnal.

We Yes that is perfectly fine just read what I had said idk what I was thinking talking about UV for leopard geckos must've forgotten it wasn't a beardie but yea .I would still Recommend a CHE instead of a night bulb because at night it's dark in the desert where they are found they could see the light from the night bulbs
