Hi, I recently started a feeder colony for a dragon, and after about 2-3 months got an ever growing fruit fly infestation. I tried multiple cups of vinegar in and outside of container, but ultimately didn't see a good solution anywhere on the internet. Below is my solution which seems to work, but I'd love to hear ideas and suggestions.
My solution: Install a computer case fan into the lid of dubia tank to suck out the flies, and prevent them from going back in.
Tools you need:
- Any power adapter that you don't care to cut up. (output should be 12v, amperage doesn't matter)
- A computer case fan (or any other 12v fan with way to connect power)
- Clear Tape
- Electrical tape
- Knife or pliers.
Installation (Difficulty 1, Time 5 minutes)
- Cut the power adapter cord.
- Connect two wires to the fan. Make sure exposed wires are not touching each other.
- Plug in the adapter to test the fan. If the fan doesn't spin. Flip the wires. Test again.
- Secure wires with electrical tape.
- Cut a hole in your crates lid (somewhere in the middle).
- Tape the fan into the hole so it blows air out.
- Plug it in, and kick back and wait.
- In about a week there will be no fruit flies.

Other lessons
- Lesson one. Found a few dead roaches after keeping vinegar inside the box (maybe related).
- Lesson two. They are roaches, they've continued to breed.

Test fit
All Taped down
2 days later (prior to that, traps have been almost empty)
Complete setup
