I went to this specialist reptile place, and although he sold them, the guy told me that cockroaches are not good for dragons, because apparently they produce high levels of E. coli and salmonella, which increases levels in dragons. He said they could be treats.
He seems very experienced, having kept dragons- and other reptiles for at least thirty years I think he said, and his own bearded dragon is twenty two years old and fighting fit! He told me that all they should eat is locusts- that crickets are bad because they bite back in their mouths. He doesn't feed veg or anything- maybe a few times a year he said. He told me that in the wild dragons wouldn't eat veg or cockroaches.
He was extremely emphatic about all of this.
Does anyone have anything to comment? Confused!

I've never heard those claims myself. The only thing that concerns me about roaches is uric acid (diet related) and possibly fat. (Haven't seems many analysis of them).

Wild dragons are opportunistic. They eat what walks by them and will forage vegetables too. They also eat a lot of termites ;)

That's not true

Dubias are considered one of the very best feeders out there. Crickets can not bite once a beardie has them in their mouth, and they need veggies everyday once adults!

Sounds like a load of hooey, personally. Also the claim of a 22 y/o dragon is eyebrow raising, but I'm no expert.

Dubia roaches are considered to be the perfect feeder for most reptiles and amphibians, and I have seen nor heard next to nothing warning against them. That may have been his personal preference which is fine, but it does not make it fact. Perhaps he had a bad experience with them and is trying to warn others, but it's likely an isolated incident if so.
Stating they wouldn't eat them in the wild and saying he doesn't feed veggies is a red flag to me that his advice should be taken with a grain of salt.

I've used this example in the past, but my reptile vet recommended sphagnum moss as a substrate for dragons. I've never heard this suggested from anyone, ever, and would never put that in the enclosure. Just goes to show sources you think would be reliable might not be as educated with them as you'd think.

dubias bad for your dragon is the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. that's damn near the healthiest feeder you can feed.

no one knows for sure and where you get your insects it actually matters try buying them from someone that breeds there insects in a clean manner LOL all reptiles carry salmonella in them so is wild insects like your regular house roaches but insects kept in captivity shouldn't have many germs opinions vary from 1 person to the next all im doing is im experimenting myself dubias are actually much better then crickets for me i put the roaches in a bowl and my dragon eats as he is hungry for some reason my dragon doesn't really like to eat when im in the room so it works good for the both of us im a bachelor and my dragon is like that too lol for me and my dragon it did not work out with crickets we both like the roaches and i also give him superworms as a desert towards the end of the night my dragon is thriving very well my dragon is going on 5 months old and he chews hes food very well but i still cant make him eat salad he just looks at it.

Yes, Cockroaches are a bad thing to feed. Dubia's on the other hand are a whole different matter all together. They are for times more nutritious that crickets so, not near as many at feeding time which in the long run costs less than stinky parasite ridden crickets.
this is the same as some people that sell bearded dragons will recommend wrong lighting and, substrates. The best thing to do is read and, research these things and, come to your own conclusion. Most petstore employees are just selling a product and, don't know diddley about dragons.

Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
