what would it mean if the fatpads are too small? does that mean they need to gain weight? or that they are sick?

It can mean both. Beardies can have reduced fat pads because of improper nutrition, illness, and parturition (egg production). If you have ruled out the first and last condition, you need to take your beardie to a reptile vet for an exam. I take my beardie crowd to a reptile vet once a year for a wellness exam and then whenever a problem or question arises. Good luck. It is time and money well spent.

Fat pads are the little convex areas of fatty tissue that may be found on the back of the beardies head, base of the tail, and other key places where bones and joints can be felt if the beardie loses calories or becomes malnourished.

Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
