Hi everyone,

Our family has decided to get a bearded dragon. We have been reading up about all the basics such as diet and appropriate habitat. We have the tank setup and ready to go. (40G Breeder Tank to start; 36" Zilla combo light with 2-50W Day, 1- 25W Black and 1-50W Black Night halogens along with a Dessert Series Flourescent; IR thermometer)

The one thing that I can't figure out is where/who to buy from. We are outside of Philadelphia and there are lots of pet stores around, but I am pretty sure that's not the best route. Can anyone offer some suggestions or recommendations for a good source of healthy captive bred BD's? What are people's opinions about shipping these animals?

I had mine shipped and he did just fine. I think many people have their beardies shipped. There are lots of qualified breeders online. Dachiu.com is in Pennsylvania. JDMdragons.com is in NJ. Justlizardsinc.com is in Pa and I think eastcoastdragons.com is in NJ?

Anyway, those are just some that might be near enough to you to pick up. But like I said, shipping is the norm and, although expensive, not usually a problem. The breeders ship overnight and pack heat packs if needed. When my little guy came out of his shipping box he was totally unstressed looking. Here he is in his little box just before I took him out:

Hey Laura,

Thanks for the response. The Dachiu's are quite close to us so I am gonna give them a call.

Anyone know if there is a regional list of breeders? Seems like it might be a good resource to put together. Maybe utilize the same concept as this site's Members Map of registered users.

Shipping really isn't that bad. I have been averaging $50 for shipping so it does add up.

One recommendation though is to not purchase from the Reptile swaps, unless it is from a breeder that you have already researched.

Not sure how far you are from Havre de Grace, PA...but I've been to the reptile show there and have found some nice beardies before. They're usually all REALLY tiny and young though. I live about 40 minutes from Philly, and the reptile show is about 40 minutes from me. They have one every month!

Right. That is part of the problem. I go to the shows for feeders and odds and ends when I need them. However, I always look around. I also always ask how old they are. I have caught a couple of breeders selling babies 1.5 months in a row. They were all from the same clutch and there age never changed. I just don't trust most people at the shows. My vet doesn't either though. So maybe I am just paranoid.

I found GA bearded dragons very reputable and honest. They told me she was almost 3 months old and i looked her up on the website and they had her birthdate and everything. I bought her from a show they were at and they didn't have any really that were tiny. All were good size and I'm sure at LEAST 2 months

They were very nice people too.

There is a reptile show in Hamburg, Pa this weekend and also on Dec 5th. Here is the web site:http://www.pythons.com/hamburg/

You could look up what vendors are going to be there and research them before going. That's just another option.

As far as a regional list of breeders, I wish there was one. I haven't found any but I think it's a great idea.

Here is a list of breeders that my breeder suggested. I got my baby from Anthony at Annapolis Bearded Dragons and I love her. He has always answered any questions I've had about her care as well. Also, check out the "For Sale" section and you will see breeders post there and you can add them to the list. Bloodbankdragons and Sizzlindragons both come to mind. Anyway, good luck finding a baby!

Breeders I recommend:

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
