It depends what's coming out of your tap.
Flint, MI isn't the only place in the US contaminated with lead, nor is it the worst.
It's also not just lead. Our local tap water has been found to contain amounts exceeding health guidelines of Bromodichloromethane, Bromoform, Chloroform, Hexavalent Chromium (the carcinogen in
Erin Brockovich), Dibromochloromethane, Dichloroacetic acid, Trihalomethanes, Trichloroacetic Acid, and more.
For many locations, what's in the local water can be found online. We've been using a tap filter--not as good as a house filter, but better than none--for
drinking/cooking water for as long as we've been in our current location.
Even bottled water can contain impurities; some is nothing more than bottled tap water, so it depends on the source.
For pets, we use distilled water; it's cheaper than bottled & chemical conditioners.
