Power outtage-leave in tank or stuff in bra (or man bra)

Postby aronoiiel » Thu Jan 23, 2020 3:14 am

So I have read a ton of tooics here and other places on power outtages. This is my second one this month which is very unusual as we have mostly stable power. It hasnt really been clear on the correct procedure to take out and stuff the dragon in your shiet or whatecer warming area you have. So. My queation is what is your procedure? Any tipa and advice wouod be nice to.

Mine so far:
Dog wakes me up becauase she panics without the tv
Check temps 75 one side 76 the other
Takes off domes and covers top with blankets and towels
An hour later temps are somewhat steady 69 and 71
Hour later 68 and 71
When temps reach 65 take out dragon wrap in blanket with carefully covered hot hands. Tuck dragon under blankets against chest. No sleep till power on.

The response required depends on the likely minimum temperature the room the tank is in will reach.

My skinks and dragons have survived a period of several days when the temperature was about 8 degC inside ( long winter power outage result of a huge winter Tasman Sea Cyclone very close to the coast ).

I was about to add to my cool temperature emergency procedures.

The thing I'm adding is an insulated and box and heat pack like people do when reptiles are shipped in cool weather.

My primary thing I did have to do once with my frog is my fireplace room. I have a gas fireplace, the power going out doesn't effect the use of that room. I set up my frog in a critter keeper with a thermometer and lots of wet paper towels. Overnight he was fine. What I thought I can do is use the insulated box with a small heat pack at the far end of the room away from the fireplace. I would have to use thermometers to ensure the spot (of the room) is not too hot for use of a heat pack in the box.

A portable generator can be an option. My parents have a whole house generator, so I would pack up and use a small set up in any long term power outage.

I live in Minnesota, USA which can be amazingly cold certain times of year but we have summer too. If it was a summer power outage I would try for a few hours of outside time for sun then have her be inside for anything 1-2 days. I doubt I will have to do that but it is an option. I cannot leave her in an outside enclosure because there are many fireflies and box elder bugs in the area, very toxic insects.

Overall you need to think about the weather for times of year where you are and other health hazards, like toxic insects, to make a plan that works.

Ok yeah understand both points! So how about this question if a generator isnt an option and no car then how would you think it best to keep the little warm. Body heat or a box of warming things? This is the second time we have lost power this month and curled up on me with warming pads under 5 blankets means no sleep for me. Which is whatever in most cases but I am currently sick so not fun.
Would she be safe in a box? Should I consider a tote then? So many people try so many things I am just wondering how do you even know they are warm enough?
