My understanding is that as long as he has sufficient places to hide you can have a tube across the entire length of the viv (not necessarily preferable though). That being said, my guy's viv is 48" long and I have a 22" fixture across the hot side of the tank, and he gets plenty of UV. I would personally prefer to use the smaller fixture as long as he is spending enough time in it.
