Shedding info for Newbies

Zazu seems to be getting lighter every time she sheds. She is also getting bumpier... is that normal? When I first got her she was smooth on her back, now she has bumps. I have looked at them through a magnifying glass to make sure it wasn't leftover Shed and as far as I can tell it isn't, it's in a fairly regular pattern too. Her spikes have also grown larger, which I would expect... but it seems as if she has added a few more....

We just brought our baby Reptar home on Monday and he's already had a belly shed. He got SO cranky and I felt so bad. I just kept talking to him until it was time to go to bed. He seems a lot better and more comfy this morning though

Hey all,
While being a member of this forum for a few months I've seen quite a few posts concerned for their dragons that turned out to be shed. While holding Richter tonight, I noticed he is shedding basically all his extremities to various degrees and thought maybe some visuals would help those starting out. Below are some photos of sheds in progress with flash and no flash.

It's worth noting dragons shed in patches, not full body like a snake. This may be small patches, large patches, or even full body pieces at a time.

Hand shed, in patches. Just starting

Tail shed, just the end. Just about done

Head shed, no flash on this one because I didn't want to blind him. Shed is complete and shiny, should be popping off any day now.

Here are some older photos of the same dragon, showing how different their sheds can be

I am unsure how helpful this would be to anyone, feel free to add your own shed photos as a resource.

Enjoy the dragons, all!
Shedding shouldn't be a problem. If the shedding takes more than a month, I would suggest giving your beardie a bath. This should move the shedding along. Also, cute shedding pics.

So Rocky went from shedding in chunks to this... see picture. I didn't even see this coming off of his belly but I saw his back, head, etc. This is the first time that I saw such extreme, full shedding. Rocky will be 7 months in 3 days. I took @KarrieRee's advice and brushed his back while bathing him....I didn't give him a full bath like usual, just about a 5 minute bath total and when all of the skin was wet, I brushed it, I then let him look at it- then he got out of the water. Rocky allowed me to brush the top of his head outside of the water as well (the brush was wet). Rocky still rubbed against objects, his behavior was a little skiddish but we still played and he wanted me to take him out. One day (the shedding was a 2 day process), I was home but really busy and left him alone in the enclosure all day and he was done shedding. I will say that he was exhausted and knocked out by 3pm. Of course I was worried but he was fine! Rocky is totally going through puberty! I can finally see his growth and his mood - he's beyond needy (which I didn't think was possible) but as long as he doesn't puff, we are good.
He bangs on the glass until I come (he stopped doing it for food and does it for my attention when I am in the next room- If I sit in the room with him and totally ignore him, he's fine. Rocky needs me near).

He's still young so he will probably usually shed in large pieces and not take so long. 2 days is quick. My beardie is 10 years old and he sheds in small patches and it takes forever. It seems like he's almost always shedding somewhere. Luckily it doesn't seem to bother him too much.

Belly sheds are easy to miss unless you have some other reason to turn them upside down.

So newbie here, when they shed, are you supposed to help them or brush off pieces of the shed for them or leave them completely alone?

When the lighting and temps are correct, shedding seems to happen naturally but I've seen others assist with shedding. I assisted Rocky the last time that he shed just to see how he would react and he appreciated it as it helped him not have to rub it off himself. Take a very soft toothbrush during bathtime and go for it gently. Please pay attention to your beardie's reaction.

Also a newbie question, how do you bathe them? He has water in his cage but I should be regularly bathing him? With what kind of soap?

About once or twice a week should be enough if the humidity is right. Just use a container big enough for him and put warm water in, water not above his elbows. You can take a soft bristle toothbrush and scrub him if he got dirty. No soap needed!

Like said after me, I take a tub and fill it with water to his elbows. I don't use soap- just water but there is Shed ease (eze?) that I have available. I let Rocky soak for 20 minutes. It worked wonderful months ago....now I am happy if I get 10-14 minutes.

The first shed, I didn't even scrub- the water did the job with the loose shed.

Please be sure to check to water temps before putting your beardie in the water and do not leave him unattended.

What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
