Why are sometimes my beardies a much darker color then they are normally? at night i notice they're much lighter then during the day when their lights are on.. what are some reasons they'd get darker sometimes? any ideas?

i have a basking light for 2 beardies in a 40 gallon tank and it doesnt seem to be getting hot enough. would it be okay to put a second smaller basking light next to it or would that be too hot?
