Is this dangerous, should I worry, what do I need to do? My beardie has a broken tail which shows flesh around the whole tail. He doesn't seem lathargic stressed discolored or otherwise unhappy. The wound dosen't seem to bother him and dosen't seem to be sensitive to the touch. the pictures are Here

Well, if the blood supply and innervation to the end of his tail has been interrupted it will die and go necrotic. That's not great. Out of curiosity, if you pinch the very end of his tail, does he try to move it away? One thing you could do is just apply a topical antiseptic like betadine to clean the area. I mean, it looks pretty good, but it's never a bad thing. I know with iguanas you can just cut off a broken end of the tail like that yourself w/something sharp and clean and it's ok, but not sure about beardies.

he moves it away slightly seeming to know whats going on but it dosen't seem to hurt him when i make contact with the end of his tail. how hard do you want me to squeeze it?

Just hard enough to get a reaction. I was wondering if he still had feeling in that part of his tail and the best way to know that is to squeeze the end, trying not to move it in relation to the rest of the tail. That way you know if the reaction was from the pinch at the end of the tail, vs moving it and aggravating the wound site. This tells you if the end has lost innervation or not.
If that happened to one of my dragons I would just wait and see, applying betadine on it once or twice a day (after cleaning w/warm water like in a bath), and as soon as I notice the tail starting to die I would cut it off w/something clean and sharp. Or take him to the vet and have the vet do it (and in the same visit you can get a fecal done if you bring in some poo, always good to know if your beardie has parasites before he gets visibly sick from them). Judging from the first picture it almost looks like it will die.

That may require a vet trip, in the mean time keep some neosporin on it or wash with betadine and water...

This is if you cant get to the vet and not the faint at heart! You can fix it just take a sharp pair of scissors and snip it just past the blood point. Wash it out with a betadine bath and keep neosporin on it! I had to do this a few times with some of the babies. You need to get it off now or it will get infected! Or get into the vet ASAP. It almost looks as it was bitten, is he housed with other dragons?

no just him thats why I don't understand how he got it. I think I will buy a new clippers and steralize it and find some neosporin and betadine because the colsest vet to me that will take care of lizards isn't even in the same city as where I'm at. Thank you for your advice.

You really need to do that now so the tail does not become necrotic. An open wound protruding is just asking for trouble. If you need any more help just ask.

Honestly what it looks like is his tail got caught in a front opening tank door. That would coincide precisely with that type of injury. As lance said you need to have that piece of his tail removed immediately or do it yourself. Either way time is of the essence cause if it becomes necrotic and you do not catch it in time infection can spread up the tail.

I was so nervous my hands were shaking while getting ready to do it, but it was actually very easy and the best part is the little guy doesn't resent me for it. He actually used to bite at everyone who tried to pick him up and since I cut that piece off he seems much better tempermented. I have, and am using both bedadine and neosporen but how often should I wash with bedadine and apply neosporen to ensure healthy healing? I posted more pictures on photobucket of the site after I cut it looks pretty clean. http://s837.photobucket.com/albums/zz293/42oMaze/

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
