How is a fecal done?

I would like to make an appointment for Dexter for a routine check up and fecal. This seems like a silly question to ask, but for a fecal, do you take a poop with you to the vet or do they somehow extract some there? If I take it with me, how fresh does it have to be? I know with cats & dogs you can put it in the fridge until you're ready to go to the vet.

take it with you - saves loads of time

I took a sample the day before and kept it in the fridge just in case I couldn't get one on the day - the fresher the better
fortunately he produced just before we set off to the vet
